In conclusion, I believe that through a good use of camera shots, angles, mise en scene, editing and finally sound affects, empathy and a general feeling of sympathy for the weakened Blackman are created as in both like a prayer an afrika shox, as we feel that they are both helpless and despite all of their pleas for help, there is no one except for Madonna and the witchdoctor who is black who are both portrayed as good Samaritans and as good people.

One of the ways in which the two music videos are different is that in LAP we are offered a representation the black community that is positive, supportive and embracing of other cultures. One section that illustrates this point is when we see Madonna's dream vision of the black gospel choir in the church; they invite Madonna to join them on the altar and she is symbolically baptized. This section has been skillfully constructed to position the audience as cinematography, sound, mise-en-scene and editing have all been used to great effect. If we look closely at this section we can identify that the camera angles are key to the general feeling of the area in new york. we see the black man at 1.48 minutes, there is a low angle medium close up of the black man who seems to be in a bad state, the low angle shot looks as though it is showing the man who is reading the newspapers view which is below the black man who is standing on a set of stairs,
At this point, the camera zooms in to a close up of the black mans face after a man who is walking by knocks his arm off. The close up is so effective because it shows his facial expressions and his general distress.
At this point in the video, there is almost completely non diagetic sound, apart from the sound of cars and sirens and the surrounding city. The reason why non diagetic sound is so effective in this scene is that we can feel empathy through the surrounding music which links to the distressed black man, and the background sounds help to create the harshness of the environment in the city. There is absolutely no dialogue in this scene.
In terms of mise-en-scene, there is the city block for the setting, which has a large square in the middle of the high rises, there is a newspaper in one of the white spectators hands, there is a yellow taxi in the background and there is a flock of birds, e.g. pidgeons. In terms of costumes, the black man is wearing army green coloured shorts and a short sleeved shirt. All of the people around the black man however are wearing suits and ties as though they are ready to go to work in a banking style profession.
The editing is not very complex in this scene, as the camerawork makes us feel empathy and disgust at the same time as we feel empathy because the black man is helpless and onlookers just ignore him even in a time of distress, we feel disgust however, as we witness the black man lose an arm e.g. he is being broken down and the white man who commits this incident/ crime just ignored what he inevitably did

africa shox analysis
One of the ways in which the two music videos are different is that in Afrika Shox the representation of the black man is only ever negative, as a weak character who is a victim. One section that illustrates this point is when we see the man in the parking garage when he is offered help by another black man. This section has been skillfully constructed to position the audience as cinematography, sound, mise-en-scene and editing have all been used to great effect. If we look closely at this section we can identify that the camera angles and positions are very important to establish the power relations. At 4:26 minutes, there is a high angle pov shot looking directly down at the weak black man, then there is a reverse shot where there is a low angle pov shot looking directly down at Africa bambaataa which translates to affectionate leader in Zulu. Finally at 4:18minutes, there is a mcu, which looks as though it is linked to the black mans view. The lighting is important as well. There is heavy lighting from above left behind the witch doctor, this light is similar to the ones that a patient looks at when they are in a hospital. This effect creates a semi silhouette, the composition of the scene is that there is a dynamic use of diagonals in the background, it is generally dark and shadowy and the only real sight of light is through reflections, the effects of the camerawork makes s feel that Bambaataa isa strong and powerful man who helps as opposed to the black man who needs help. The sound is also important, with the wiktch doctor intr scene, there is a non diagetic, where the sound track stops and we begin to hear a siren and diagetic sounds and then after the witch doctor say’s “do you need a hand”, the sound becomes a mixture between diagetic and non diagetic sound. The no reply from the weak black man shows and emphasizes the weakness and the helplessness of the man. The mise en scene is also very important, this includes the location, which is a multie story car park. The concrete of the car park makes it seem cold and an unforgiving environment. The costumes are key =, as the weak man is wearing a dark green pair of shorts with a short sleeved shirt which is like they wear in the military links to how soldiers are injured and broken like he was. The witch doctor wears big chunky African clothes which link back to Africa. With the props, the aren’t many but one that evidently stands out from the few other is the witchdoctors staff, staffs are usually linked to leaders and are important signs of power, which also links back to his name in Zulu which translates back to affectionate leader, also his jewellery which also links to power but also wealth, there are signs of NVC which are the posture which with the weak back man is bent over, almost crippled as opposed to the witch doctors posture which is upright symbolizing his power. Also the facial expressions, firstly the witch doctors, where we see him wearing his glasses which makes him seem more mysterious., where as the weak black man has a distressed facial expression, as he has an open mouth , with a sign that it is difficult to breathe including his rolling eyes making him seem very weak.

One of the ways in which the two music videos are different is that in LAP we are offered a positive representation of the black community from the scene in the church where the choir are singing and Madonna joins the in with their dancing and singing. One section that illustrates this point is when we see Madonna having a baptism style ceremony performed on her after she has been dancing with them to the choirs songs. Through this baptism, we gather that the black community are a positive and embracing group of people who no matter what colour of skin or whether or not you are an ethnic minority or superiority. This section has been skillfully constructed to position the audience as cinematography, sound, mise-en-scene and editing have all been used to great effect. If we look closely at this section we can identify that.

One of the ways in which the two music videos are different is that in LAP we are offered a representation of black men that is positive. One section that illustrates this point is when we see Madonna's flashback vision of the attack on the young woman and the young black man acting as a good samaritan when he selflessly comes to her aid. This section has been skillfully constructed to position the audience as cinematography, sound, mise-en-scene and editing have all been used to great effect. If we look closely at this section we can identify that There are a range of shots used,a below eye level shot is used to create the effect that we as an audience look up to the character for his courage and willingness to go and help the girl who has been stabbed, even if it means that he is arrested in the process. There is also a medium close up, this hot is used to show more of the black mans emotions and general remorse for the woman, this shot also allows us to see that when the man is taken away by the police, the woman falls which shows that without his helping, the woman fails and will eventually die. There is also a medium long shot. The reason why this shot is used is that it shows the surrounding background which shows that it is a low rent area but it also enables us to see some of the mans facial emotions and his clothing. finally there is an eye level shot used, this is used because the sight of his sad eyes and distressed face help to create empathy and sympathy towards the character.
the sound used in the music video is almost completely non diagetic. What is meant by this term is that the sound that is used in a video is edited in to a film clip and the actual singing or speaking occurs somewhere else. The reason why they have used non diagetic sound in this music video is because it creates the effect of all of the focus being turned to the visual dialogue instead of the dialogue between characters. The lyrics in the music video have a loose link towards the occurances in the video, an example of this is like a prayer, this is emphasised early on in the video when we see madonna going to the church and praying for the black man who is behind bars to be let out.
in this music video, there is a quite diverse analysis of the mise-en-scene. we first realise that the music video is set in a low rent area which is possibly quite dodgy and overall it has quite an eery feel to it. We also see that the costumes are plain and the gangsters are wearing shabby and cheap looking clothing which you wouldn't expect to cost very much, whereas the black man is wearing a white collared shirt with a smart jacket and black working trousers but they are not steriotypical clothes for a young black male of the time to be wearing, also the fact that he is wearing smarter clothes than the gangsters helps to create a contrast between the two as we as the audience from the veru beginning feel that the gangsters are up to no good plainly down to the clothes that they are wearing and at first sight, we get the feeling that the black man is good and when he goes to help the woman we are not at all surprised by thes actions as we are hinted at what his personality is like through the clothes that he wears. We soon after meet the police man who is wearing a common police officers uniform of the time, this outfit is representative of the law and how the law back then was prejudiced against the blacks at the time. the first prop that we see is the back car seat which symbolises again that the area is low rent. We also see that there is a knife which here represents death and the police car later helps to show that bad things clearly happen a lot in that area as the police car was obviously travelling around slowly enough to see the black man holding a stabbed woman. We also can see his posture and facial expression, he is kneeling on the ground holding the stabbed woman who is lying in his arms. We can see that he is sad, shocked and confused about everything that is happening but when he is hand cuffed by the policeman, he dos not look at all suprised and the only sign shown is when he looks to Madonna to help him out of this bad situation.
In this music video, in terms of Editing we see that there is quite a quick pace between the shots, this is proven when we see that there are 14 short shots in the space of around 30 seconds. In the scenes, we get a chronological flashback to the stabbing and the arrest but after this scene, the story runs on in real time. The extremely quick pace generates energy and shows how quickly things can change as the black man goes from the good Samaritan to a supposed murderer in a very short space of time. The flash backs link the story to the church where the music video eventually ends.

Madonna has sold more than 300 million records worldwide and is recognized as the world's top-selling female recording artist of all time by the Guinness World Records. According to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), she is the best-selling female rock artist of the 20th century and the second top-selling female artist in the United States, behind Barbra Streisand, with 64 million certified albums. In 2008, Billboard magazine ranked Madonna at number two, behind only The Beatles, on the Billboard Hot 100 All-Time Top Artists, making her the most successful solo artist in the history of the chart. She was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the same year. Considered to be one of the most influential figures in contemporary music, Madonna is known for continuously reinventing both her music and image, and for retaining a standard of autonomy within the recording industry. She is recognized as an inspiration among numerous music artists. Madonna's other ventures include being a fashion designer, children's book author, film director and producer, and owner of her own recording company Maverick corporation, as a joint venture with Time Warner. She has been acclaimed as a businesswoman, and in 2007, she signed an unprecedented US $120 million contract with Live Nation.
The 50-year-old had appealed after a lower court rejected her original application to adopt Chifundo "Mercy" James, four, over residency issues. This shows that she is ethnically diverse and shows that she is not racist

This is an example of one of her most successful years of which there were many just like this back from the year of 1987, from film awards to music awards.
She has been said to be the most respected businesswoman and female musician of the 20th century. In the top 100 musicians of all time only second to the beatles.
this information has helped me to realize many things about madonna. Firstly that she is absolutely adored by her fans worldwide, this is summed up by the fact that in her relatively short time of being a pop star she has sold over three hundred million records world wide and despite being fifty now her most attended and highest grossing tour was actually her most recent tour, this was called the sticky and sweet tour, which shows that her fans didn't just love her because of her age but mainly because of her amazing voice. secondly that she is possibly the most well known musician of all time and in the list of all time great musicians, she finished in second and was only denied the title by the BEETLES. if you visit almost any country in the world, almost all of there population will know the name madonna. Even tiny babies know of her name. another thing that makes her so popular is her ethnicity. the reason why this makes her so popular is that people of all cultures feel welcome and comfortable. a sign of her ethnicity was the adoption of the African born baby Mercy James who inevitably was from a completely different and less fortunate culture. Finally the last thing that makes her so popular is her sexuality, the reason why this was so effective was that she was not afraid to do things that other artists may fear that it would scar and ruin their reputation.
Afrika Bambaataa, born Kevin Donovan on April 10, 1960 in the South Bronx of New York City, New York, revolutionized music forever. His tremendous impact, influence, popularity, and recognition have earned him the respect and fame to be amongst the giants of the music industry
Most notably, in a career of over 30 years, Bambaata revolutionized Hip Hop more than any other person and greatly influenced the electronic/dance worlds and helped substantiate a culture that still affects us today.
During his early years, Bam took a musical interest in its many forms, playing the trumpet and the piano at his high school before he became warlord of one of the most feared gangs of New York-the Black Spades. However, by 1976, he began to be influenced by the
DJ styles of Kool DJ Dee and Kool DJ Herc and expanded his music interests through records of various genres, from rock to R&B, from mainstream to underground.
he has been linked with the name of the best rapper of all time, and even the wizard for his magical music.
this information has helped me to realize that Afrika Bambaataa is a very proclaimed and talented musician in which he has sold tonnes of amazing albums of which they are very popular.
the reason why Bambaataa was so famous and well known was because he switched his life around and even when times were tough for him while he was in a gang, he still felt that there was hope for others who were in the same situation as him. He did this by getting all of the people from the gangs in Bronx who were known as the black spades, but from this, he created the Bronx river organization who were specialized in performing arts. He then saw the film Zulu which showed the british army fighting the zulu people, and he was sad with what he saw, from this film he named himself Afrika Bambaataa (affectionate leader), and then changed the Bronx river organisation into the zulu nation, where they adopted rapping and writing with graffiti and that was how Afrika Bambaataa. This shows that not only did Bambaataa create brilliant music but his soul aims were to mend the community that he grew up in and lived in and he just wanted peace and a resolvence of the fighting.
Switching his life around after seeing what violence was doing to his community, Bam transformed most of The Black Spades into The Bronx River Organization, a performing group. Sometime during the existence of this group, he saw the film Zulu which depicted the battle between British troops and the Zulu tribe, one of the most powerful and sophisticated states in Africa. Deeply inspired, he changed The Bronx River Organization into the Zulu Nation and named himself Afrika Bambaataa (meaning "affectionate leader") Aasim in honor of the 19th century Zulu chief. He then adopted the Zulu Nations' principles of unity and peace and mixed it with the Hip Hop lifestyle. Gangmembers became b-boys, rappers, and graffiti/aerosol writers, and violence was averted through knowledge, unity, and peace. Soon, Bam and his Zulu Nation reached out to their community in a positive light and began to help the youth through various

| Define | Effasect |
Handheld | A hand-held camera can produce a jerky, bouncy, unsteady image, which may create a sense of immediacy or chaos. Its use is a form of subjective treatment. | 20.this shows trinity fleeing the scene after being spotted by agent smith. This shot is used because it gives a sense of urgency and struggle to a shot. |
Tracking | Tracking involves the camera itself being moved smoothly towards or away from the subject (contrast with zooming). Tracking in (like zooming) draws the viewer into a closer, more intense relationship with the subject; moving away tends to create emotional distance. | After 35 seconds of the matrix clip there is a tracking shot, which is going towards trinity as she approaches and then on to agent smith. The reason why this shot is used is that it creates a feel of action as it increases the movement and speed of the shot. |
Dollying | The camera is placed on a moving vehicle and moves alongside the action, generally following a moving figure or object. A dolly shot may be a good way of portraying movement, the journey of a character for instance, or for moving from a long shot to a close-up, gradually focusing the audience on a particular object or character. | 50.this is when trinity is running from agent smith. This shot is used to create a sense of speed and urgency to a things actions |
Panning | A movement, which scans a scene horizontally. The camera is placed on a tripod, which operates as a stationary axis point as the camera is turned, often to follow a moving object, which is kept in the middle of the frame. | 26-28.this shows us that the main character is moving at a great speed. It also shows us the characters key movements. This shot is used for these very reasons. |
Whip pan | A pan shot, but the camera moves sideways so quickly that the image blurs. | 1.16 this is when trinity looks at agent smith and then hides. This is used to show good details. |
Zooming In/Out | In zooming in the camera does not move; the lens is focussed down from a long-shot to a close-up whilst the picture is still being shown. The subject is magnified, and attention is concentrated on details previously invisible as the shot tightens (contrast tracking). | 134-1.37.this is after trinity smashes through the window and the camera focuses on the guns and then zooms in on her face. This shot is used as it helps to show the details of the surrounding areas and then also the closer smaller features |
Crane shot | Basically, dolly-shots-in-the-air. A crane (or jib), is a large, heavy piece of equipment, but is a useful way of moving a camera - it can move up, down, left, right, swooping in on action or moving diagonally out of it. | 1.31-1.34. This is when trinity is diving through the air to reach the window. This shot is used as it gives a sense of false reality, as this usually would never happen in the real world. |
High angle | The camera is elevated above the action using a crane to give a general overview. High angles make the object photographed seem smaller, and less significant (or scary). | 29.this is when trinity looks down and sees an agent. This shot is used as it shows the height that a character is at. |
Low angle | These increase height (useful for short actors like Tom Cruise or James McAvoy) and give a sense of speeded motion. Low angles help give a sense of confusion to a viewer, of powerlessness within the action of a scene. | 47. This is when Trinity is jumping across the rooftops. The reason why this shot is used as it shows the height and the width of this shot. |
Dutch Tilt | Terms used for a cinematic tactic often used to portray the psychological uneasiness or tension in the subject being filmed. A Dutch angle is achieved by tilting the camera off to the side so that the shot is composed with the horizon at an angle to the bottom of the frame. | 1.48trinity is looking up at the window to see if she will be shot. This shot is used as it helps to create an uneasiness as the shot is at a weird angle. |
Focus (depth / pull (rack)) | Rendering only part of the action field in sharp focus through the use of a shallow depth of field. A shift of focus from foreground to background or vice versa is called rack focus. | The cameras focus is first on the gun and then the focus is moved on to her face, which makes the audience look from one to the other (1.38). This has the effect of first impressing upon us the danger of the two inanimate guns pointed and waiting to do their job and then it shows us the emotion of the situation with the character looking fearful but determined. |

Inception - Don't be afraid to dream a little bigger
I like this film clip firstly because the speed of the clip helps to build tension, along with the peoples voices and the music that went with it. the reason why the peoples voices helped to build tension was that you could feel that they were tense and worried about something that is going to happen.
in this shot there are around four people involved, one of the men is wearing a shirt with blood on it suggesting that he has been hurt somewhere on the upper part of his body. we then see that one of the men has a highly powerful gun at which he is firing at a man who is clearly an enemy. Then along appears a man who has a very calm voice. This man has a grenade launcher and his calm voice suggests that he has used one before.
In the clip, the camera work is quite jerky almost as though it was done to speed up the pace of the scene. this clip was mainly done by a hand held camera, I believe it helps to give it a sense of action and excitement as it helps you to believe that you are actually there along with the action.
there is a tracking shot after 8 seconds where the camera follows Leonardo Di'caprio as he walks away and then follows back with the other actor.
in between 40 and 50 seconds of the clip, the shot zooms in on the character with the gun and then zooms out to a medium close up shot and then zooms back in to a close up shot once he starts firing again. Another example of this is after one minute and two second. This is after the man fires his grenade launcher and it shows the grenade exploding the enemies along with a large column of piping, and just after the explosion starts, the camera zooms out so that you can see the shear power of the weapon. Then after 9 seconds there is a focussing detail where the camera is focused on the man in the brown jacket and then as he walks towards the camera, and at that point, his figure goes blurry. This is done as when this is done, things that you initially may not have been able to see in the shot may become more obvious and easy to see, in this case the image that is focussed upon is a lady whom we have no idea what her role in this clip is. after 29 seconds, there is a whip pan shot where the camera focuses on the enemy gunman and then the camera whip pans it's view over to the other enemy gunman. The reason why this type of shot was used in this clip is firstly as it gives a clip speed because of how the camera jerks but it also gives a sense of uncontrollable tension as quick movements suggest fear.

this image of the hands up clenched around the bars is good as it shows the follow on details of the previous shot. this is interesting as it shows that the person is obviously distressed as they are trying to pull open a large gate. this shot is a medium close up, this has been used as it shows a bit of the surrounding area but mainly shows a good detail of the hands.
